We build a gender-just, violence-free society through law, legal literacy, counselling and community action — standing with every woman who needs us.
"Law is an instrument of social change — and women are the changemakers."
— Madhupurna Ghosh, Co-FounderSutanutir Sakhya was founded in 2002 by its co-founders Madhupurna Ghosh and Sankar Nath Mitra in Kolkata with the intent to facilitate and promote developmental issues of women, children and elderly persons irrespective of caste, community, religion and economic status. It is unique of Sutanutir Sakhya to address the issue of women's empowerment through Law, as law is an instrument of social change and can be used in different ways to realize the human rights of women.
Since our founding in 2002, we have worked with adolescent girls, single women, domestic workers, and survivors of violence — using legal literacy, vocational training, counselling and community mobilisation to build lasting change.
To empower women — especially those who are victims of violence, deprivation and distress — through a rights-based, people-centred, participatory approach that promotes gender equality and legal literacy.
A better world for women: where counselling, vocational training, and self-development enable every woman to live with dignity, free from poverty, discrimination and violence.

Volunteering here made me realise how much work is left — and how much difference a dedicated team can make. I have found a second family.
আমরা আমাদের শিল্প দিয়ে নিজেদের সংসার চালাতে পারছি। (We can now run our households with our own art.) Sutanutir Sakhya gave us the training, confidence, and the platform.
Sutanutir Sakhya brings the law to the doorstep of women who need it most. Their legal-literacy camps are some of the most organised and compassionate I have seen in 20 years of practice.
Before joining Sutanutir Sakhya's programme, I did not know I had legal rights. Today I am in college, I volunteer in camps, and my younger sister looks up to me. This organisation changed the direction of my life.
